Changes of community response to aircraft noise exposure over time

Abstract: When analyzing the development of community response to traffic noise over time, it is important to distinguish between steady state and step change circumstances of noise exposure. The latter generally goes along with an overreaction of the residents. With an increase of sound levels, people are much more annoyed than would be predicted by steady-state dose/response curves, whereas with a decrease of the sound levels, they are less annoyed. In two surveys around Zurich Airport (Switzerland), carried out within the „Swiss Noise Study 2000“ in 2001 and 2003, the development of noise annoyance both in the steady state situation and in a step change situation were examined. In the residential areas around the airport without any change of the exposure level between 2001 and 2003, the dose-response relationship remained the same. One residential area was newly affected by landing aircraft early in the morning and late in the evening. These residents showed a considerable overreaction in noise annoyance. No relationship between sound levels and noise annoyance was found for this area. It seems that the residents reacted rather to the difference of the sound level than to the actual sound level.
