Abstract: Within the Swiss Noise Study 2000, a survey on community response to aircraft noise exposure was carried out. In August and September 2001, 1296 persons living in the Zurich Airport vicinity and being affected with civil aircraft noise filled out a noise annoyance questionnaire. The results show that the relationship between aircraft sound level and annoyance is comparatively small. In areas with low civil aircraft sound levels, the subjects’ annoyance was remarkably high. Noise annoyance was based on the acoustical situation experienced indoors with open windows or outside the house. Several personal and situational factors influenced noise annoyance and explain much more of its variance than the sound level alone.
